Two diabolo shuffle
Two diabolos on one string, passing each other back and forth. The doorway into multiple diabolos, and a fixed axle makes it far easier.
Two diabolos share one string and trade places, each one crossing while the other is on its way back. It is the foundation of every two-diabolo trick, and for a long time it will be the only one you can do with two.
Expect this to take weeks rather than an afternoon. That is normal and is not a sign that you have missed something.
Why a fixed axle here
Two diabolos on one string collide constantly, and every collision costs spin. A fixed axle lets you feed speed back in continuously as part of the shuffle itself, so the pair stays alive.
A bearing axle spins longer from a single throw but is far harder to re-accelerate mid-shuffle, and the two diabolos will fight each other. This is why fixed axles are the standard choice for multiple diabolos, and it is a practical fact rather than a rule.
Building up to it
Start with one diabolo and learn to accelerate on one side only, with the diabolo held to the right of centre. Half of the shuffle is that motion done twice as often.
The shuffle
- Start one diabolo on the string, fast and true.
- Add the second by rolling it on from the right, so both sit on the string with a gap between them.
- Move the right stick up and to the left, sending the right diabolo across toward the left hand.
- As it crosses, move the right stick back down and to the right, catching the other one and sending it the other way.
The motion is a small figure-of-eight with the right hand, and the left hand does almost nothing at first.
What goes wrong
They collide immediately. The gap was too small, or the crossing was too slow. Send the first one further before starting the second.
They both slow down and die. You stopped accelerating. In a shuffle the acceleration never stops; it is folded into the crossing motion.
One shoots off the end. The string is not level, or one diabolo is leaning. Fix the lean before adding the second one back.
It works for two crossings then falls apart. That is the normal shape of learning this. Two becomes four becomes ten over weeks.
When it is working
Ten crossings without a collision, both diabolos still fast. From there the two-diabolo repertoire opens up, and almost none of it requires anything new beyond doing this comfortably.
